Empowering Women and Nonbinary Musicians in Sigma Alpha Iota

Sigma Alpha Iota, commonly referred to as SAI, is not just a music fraternity, but a welcoming community that encourages the love of music among its members while emphasizing mentorship and outreach. 

Founded on the mission to support and cultivate the art of music, SAI engages students at the University of Kentucky through various activities that promote both personal growth and community involvement.

“SAI creates community through social activities like picnics in the park, playing music with each other, and many fundraising and service projects,” said the Vice President of Rituals Taylor Cooper. 

Vice President of Membership Ella Lavy described SAI as a safe place where members enjoy social events while exploring their passion for music. 

“It’s nice to meet more people who I wouldn’t normally meet,” Lavy said. “Our members like to be involved pretty much anywhere in fine arts, and it creates a social network for a lot of people.”

The Delta Omega chapter plays an integral role in the College of Fine Arts by providing a place for women and non-binary people in music to collaborate and grow together. Many members of SAI participate actively in the UK band and orchestra, and graduated members continue to share their gratitude for the fraternity.

“I know many SAI alumni members that still think about SAI and love that they were able to be a part of this organization,” Cooper said.

One of SAI’s key outreach initiatives involves partnering with a local Girl Scout troop to help them earn their music badges. 

“We invite Girl Scouts to come learn about music with our chapter,” Cooper said. “This helps spread the love of music to younger generations.”

Mentorship plays a vital role within SAI, particularly for new members. Cooper noted that the organization provides “guiding stars,” older members who support newcomers in navigating SAI's history and values. 

As leaders, both Lavy and Cooper said they are dedicated to enhancing the organization’s impact. Lavy oversees recruitment, ensuring that new members feel welcomed and prepared for initiation. 

“I know how nerve-wracking being a new member can be,” Lavy said. “I want to make sure our members, new or old, always know they can talk to me about anything.”

As Vice President of Ritual, Cooper helps maintain the ritual events and the upkeep of ritual materials of UK’s SAI chapter.

“I took on this role to have a bigger part in the leadership of SAI,” Cooper said. “I love organization, so I felt this role fit.”

Reflecting on the future, both leaders expressed hopes for the continued growth of SAI. 

“I think SAI gives a safe space for women and nonbinary people who love music to come and be around people who also love music,” Cooper said. “Many SAI current and alumni members seek careers in music and want music to continue to be in their lives in some way or another.”

As SAI continues to flourish, its members remain committed to spreading the joy of music while prioritizing a welcoming community for women and non-binary people in music.
