Fashion at the 2025 Inauguration

Kenley Likins

Who knew a hat would be the most memorable thing about this year’s presidential inauguration?

Most people don’t expect to see a fashionable lineup when they tune in to the inauguration, but the women of this year were nothing short of elegant. I believe these were some of the classiest outfits worn on inauguration day since Jackie Kennedy was First Lady. And since her outfits are currently hanging in museums, that is saying something.

Warning: this blog is not based on politics or anything related to politics. I’m just solely discussing fashion and the clothes for what they are, gorgeous.

Of course, the outfit that immediately caught my eye was First Lady, Melania Trump. During her first term as First Lady she was seen wearing primarily European brands, however, this time she’s turning her attention to American designers. Melania was styled by a non-household name, Adam Lippes. She wore a long navy double-breasted coat, accompanied by a wool pencil skirt of the same color. Of course, the star of the show was her navy and white boater-style hat designed by Eric Javits. Elegance and class are the two words that come to mind when I see this look. One of the things I love most about First Lady fashion is the opportunity to make a statement on the world stage, and I think Melania Trump did just that. It was classy and timeless all the while making a bold statement and doing something just a little different from what we typically see. It almost had a mysterious energy to it.

People have kept their eyes on what the First Ladies are wearing since the beginning, especially on inauguration day, and they always seem to convey a message or give a nod to previous First Ladies. During the 2017 inauguration, it was Melania Trump in her gorgeous powder blue look giving hints of Jackie Kennedy. This year it was Second Lady Usha Vance giving Jackie Kennedy energy. Vance was wearing a custom Oscar de la Renta pink cashmere coat dress. I think this look was absolutely beautiful. The pastel pink color complimented her so nicely and was such a fun pop of color compared to all of the dark colors we typically see. My favorite part about the look was the flower earrings, which completed the girly, soft look. The sleek hair allowed for the earrings to have their moment.

Ivanka Trump was seen in an emerald green skirt suit with a matching hat. It included a simple black belt that cinched the waist in. Although this was stunning, I felt more drawn to her Liberty ball gown. She wore a strapless, black and white gown with black gloves. Her hair was in a beautiful French twist. My favorite part about this look is that it is a re-creation of the dress worn by Audrey Hepburn for her 1954 film “Sabrina”. Audrey Hepburn will always be one of my favorite style icons, so I loved that she paid homage to such an influential person in fashion.

Once again, this year's inauguration fashion shows that style can speak volumes.
